CARACAS, (IPS) - Millones de venezolanos salieron a votar desde la madrugada de este domingo, en el referendo que decidirá si Hugo Chávez es ratificado o revocado como presidente, formando ante los centros de sufragio las más largas colas que se hayan visto en proceso electoral alguno en este país sudamericano.

”El Centro Carter (para la Paz) ha participado en más de 50 elecciones en el mundo, y ésta es la presencia de electores más grande que yo haya visto”, dijo al promediar la mañana el ex presidente estadounidense y premio Nobel de la Paz Jimmy Carter.

Chávez sufragó al mediodía en una escuela secundaria en la barriada obrera ”23 de Enero”, tradicional bastión izquierdista en el oeste de la ciudad, donde hacían fila para votar unas 700 personas, más varios miles de habitantes que se congregaron en los alrededores para dar vivas al mandatario.

Chavez claimed victory early Monday morning, and his U.S.-backed opposition immediately challenged the results. Voters queued for hours outside the polls in the longest lines ever seen in an election in this South American oil-producing nation.

Nobel Peace laureate and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, one of the international observers, said the Carter Centre had monitored nearly 50 elections around the world and that he had never before seen such a turnout.

Chávez voted at noon in a local high school in the “23 de Enero” working class neighbourhood, a traditional bastion of the left in western Caracas, where some 700 people were queueing up and several thousand others crowded around to cheer the president.
