Aqui, Alli, and Alla - Lesson about This & That, Here & There

These words identify specific things and locations in Spanish. You don ’t have to use the “location ”every time you want to use these words, but it ’s good to remember which location the word belongs to. That way you won’t end up saying “that guy way over there” when the guy is right in front of you! Another memorization technique is to remember them in order: aquí, allí, and allá, and remember that you get farther away as you go through the list. Acá is synonymous with aquí - and you'll find that some countries use acá more frequently, while others stick with aquí.

Hi all. How is allá different from ahí? Are they used in different regions of the world? According to this website:
http://spanish.about.com/library/weekly/aa101702a.htm

the three versions are:
aquí, allí and ahí

Good question! Textbook Spanish often doesn't mention the ahí version of allí - and I've noticed that some countries have that in the newspaper more than others (if I'm not mistake the Southern Cone uses this frequently).

When I learned Mexican Spanish we weren't introduced to the ahí version - but why don't I see if we can get some Spanish teachers to weigh in on this. I'll also do a Google on it to see what I can find.

Hello! I am from Spain. What I say is "aquí" (here: I can see it, I can reach it), "ahí" (there: although I can see it I can't reach it) and "allí" (over there: quite far away, perhaps I don't even even see it not because it is far but because it is just in my mind). Hope it helps...

Excuse me... but I'm not going to use accents.. but this is what I believe...

aqui = here (ex. Here on the table)
ahi = there (on a table nearby)
alli = over there (on a table across the room)

alla = over there (over there in China), mainly used to point out things a lot further in distance or time.

Hope this clears things up.
