The Verb Dar: Expressions & Idioms

Idiomatic phrases using the verb "dar" = to give

One of my strongest impressions involving an idiom using the verb dar is about "dar la vuelta." This can be used to mean taking a short spin, but usually involves cruising around for fun - which if you ask me would be more adequately described by "dando las VUELTAS!" One of my friends or host sisters would casually say "vamos a dar la vuelta?" - and more often than not, we would then spend several hours driving around, and around, and around the city. In the beginning I would ask them where the heck we were going - "vamos a comer? vamos a la casa de alguien? vamos a una tienda?" - but to my frustration we never seemed to arrive anywhere! But as I soon learned, in small towns in Mexico, that's the exact point of "dando la vuelta." Driving around, in order to see who else is doing the same. After a while it actually began to seem like fun... :)

News reading for the Day...CBS News - ¡Qué Disastre!

This issue over CBS News offers some new vocabulary, so I thought it might be nice to read a related article. Not that this is political opinion website...but I personally think Mr. Rather should convertirse en un hombre jubilado ya muy pronto!

key vocabulary:

dudas = doubts
intenta restaurar = tries to restore
la autenticidad = the authenticity
publicidad negativa = negative publicity
reportaje = report
si hubieran dicho = if they would have said

Spanish Lesson of the Week - ¡Politics & Political Vocabulary!

Palabras Políticas y de las Elecciones - Political & Election Words

Election time! For many people this is a very exciting time, and much of the news revolves around issues and vocabulary related to politics and voting. While politics may be a bad issue to bring up when you're traveling abroad...you'll find that many people will ask you questions about your political system, and it's nice to at least know the vocabulary - even if you plan to just say "no me gusta hablar de la política..." (I don't like to talk about politics).

Spanish News Reading for the day...the President courts the Hispanic Vote

key vocabulary:

apelaron = appealed
apoyo = support
demócratas - democrats
disputados = disputed
estado = state
republicanos = republicans

Aqui, Alli, and Alla - Lesson about This & That, Here & There

These words identify specific things and locations in Spanish.You don ’t have to use the “location ”every time you want to use these words, but it ’s good to remember which location the word belongs to. That way you won’t end up saying “that guy way over there” when the guy is right in front of you! Another memorization technique is to remember them in order: aquí, allí, and allá, and remember that you get farther away as you go through the list. Acá is synonymous with aquí - and you'll find that some countries use acá more frequently, while others stick with aquí.

¡Qué Miedo! Hurricane Ivan continues its march towards the USA...

This is one to really watch - let's pray it avoids New Orleans, where a landfall would be catastrophic beyond words.

key vocabulary:

ha avanzado = has advanced
huracán = hurricane
pronósticos = forecasts
viento = wind

A New Mexican Recipe from Sandrita - Rajas con Crema

Here is another one of my marido's favorite meals. I think all of the meals I prepare for him are his favoritos, as they are all prepared with loving care for my family :)

Rajas con crema

20-25 chiles anaheim
1 medium white onion
2 jars of mexican table cream
or 1 large tub of sour cream

Take your chiles and place on a comal or grill. Char them until they are dark dark green almost black, then place in a plastic bag until all chiles are charred. Remove charred skin from all the chiles and open, remove seeds and veins, cut into long strips.

In a large pan, place 1/4 oil on high heat. Once the oil is hot - pour in 2 jars of cream or sour cream. Once it starts to bubble, add the chile strips and turn down to simmer. Add salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste.

These are very good with tostadas! ¡Espero que los disfruten!
