| Welcome
to Vol. 37 of the Spanish Online Newsletter! Your weekly Spanish
learning with mp3s, as well as links to Spanish travel spots and
more. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, If you don't get a
weekly newsletter once and a while don't worry about your email
address being incorrect or anything, sometimes I get too busy to
write the weekly letter. Lately travel and work has kept me muy
opupada... I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving - ¡FELIZ
DÍA DEL PAVO! This week's newsletter is about my recent trip
to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, including phrases that can be helpful
on a vacation to a Spanish speaking location.
Puerto
Vallarta: Land of Mariachis & Sunsets
During
the Aztec reign in Mexico (1000 BC to 550 AD), the Southwest coastal
region was inhabited mostly by Toltec indians whose sedentary
way of life centered around fishing.
Puerto
Vallarta was almost unheard of until the 1960s when American director
John Huston filmed the movie "The Night of the Iguana"
there - bringing an aura of mystique as well as a lot of publicity
to the region. Soon afterwards Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
bought a house in Puerto Vallarta, further increasing the world's
interest in the town. You may be suprised to hear that modern
Puerto Vallarta is a far cry from the sleepy tropical village
depicted in the old movies - in fact the city now has over 400,000
inhabitants. While tourism drives the beach zones, there is also
a thriving pharmeceutical industry in Puerto Vallarta, with over
20 factories. The proximity to Mexico City (4 hours by car, 45
minutes by plane) makes it an attractive location for companies.
