Lesson of the Week: Palabras de Religión - Words for Religion
Don't be surprised of somebody you meet in the Spanish speaking world asks you straight out "eres católico?" or "qué religión eres?" For them religion is a big part of life, and approximately 80 to 90% of Latin Americans are Catholic. When I was first living in Zacatecas I was a little bewildered at trying to explain in my broken Spanish that I was Episcopalian, which few had ever heard of! Some people even asked me "no eres católica, pero crees en Dios?" (you're not Catholic, but you believe in God?) Despite the emphasis on Catholicism, there are many other religions practiced througout Latin America. Here are some general statistics for religious groups from the CIA World Fact Book.
